Abstract
This research focuses on establishing the association between the resolution of arithmetic problems and the causal attributions of success and failure on mathematics learning in 4th grade primary school students of public schools in the cities of Lima Metropolitana and Huancayo, as well as on the comparison of such variables among the students of these cities. A correlational design and subsequently a descriptive-comparative design are used in this research. For that purpose, the adaptation of the Type of Statements of Arithmetic Problems Test (PTEPA in Spanish) and the Attributive Style Questionnaire (EAT in Spanish) was performed. A non-probabilistic and intention design was used for the selection of the sample, among the students of the state educational institutions of Lima Metropolitana and Huancayo. The sample is constituted by 382 participants (185 of Lima and 197 of Huancayo). The results show that there is a relationship between resolution of arithmetic problems and the attributive styles of success and failure, as well as significant differences in the resolution of multiplication and division arithmetic problems among the students of Huancayo and Lima Metropolitana in favor of the students of Huancayo. It was also discovered differences in the dimensions of the attributive styles referred to the attribution of academic failure to lack of effort, to the academic success to ability, attributions of success to effort and attributions of failure to lack of ability among the students of Lima Metropolitana and Huancayo, in favor of the students of Lima.
