Abstract
With the aim of establishing the relationship between knowledge about HIV / AIDS and the self-perception of the risk of acquiring it in fifth-year secondary school students from state and private institutions in a district of Metropolitan Lima. 182 students were surveyed, divided equally between the two types of schools, with ages between 15 and 18 years. The study is descriptive level, basic type and a descriptive, correlational and comparative design was applied. The instrument used is the HIV / AIDS -65 Scale to measure the two variables, since it measures different aspects related to HIV / AIDS. The results indicate that there is a mean and significant positive relationship between knowledge about HIV / AIDS and self-perception of the risk of contracting it and there are no significant differences in knowledge and selfperception of the risk of contracting it among fifth-year high school students from state schools compared to private school students. Concluding that when the correct knowledge is greater, it influences that the self-perception of risk is also greater in fifth-year high school students from state and private schools, becoming knowledge an important protective factor
