Abstract
The main objective of this research was to determine whether the perception of communicative competence influences the academic (de)motivation of the Translation and Interpretation student of a university in Lima, Peru, 2022. To this end, a qualitative approach, descriptive level and phenomenological design research was carried out. The instrument used was the in-depth interview, which was constructed by considering three deductive categories: perception of communicative competence, demotivation and motivation of the student. The instrument was applied to six participants who met the following inclusion criteria: have been a Translation and Interpretation student of a university in Lima for at least one year and give their informed consent to participate in the research. After analyzing the results, it was found that the perception of the (former) student’s communicative competence is mostly negative due to difficulties they had with the communicative skills acquisition. This situation triggered negative emotional effects, such as affectation of the willing to communicate orally and in anxious situations, and later in most cases led to cessation in academic studies. Therefore, the conclusion is that there is a significant relationship between the perception of communicative competence and academic demotivation in the Translation and Interpretation student. Further studies are required to determine how problems with communication skills affect students emotionally in this career.
